DIVISION/PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:Health Inspectors are vital in averting preventable illness and diseases. As a health inspector, you will travel throughout the five boroughs of New York City to ensure compliance with health regulations relating to the environment. JOB DESCRIPTION:This includes groundbreaking laws to protect the public’s health such as the Smoke-Free Air Act, which eliminated smoking and second-hand smoke in all public places; the banning of trans fats in NYC food facilities, and mandating calorie information be displayed in restaurants to prevent and reduce heart disease and obesity in New York City. The window guard law and day camp regulations continue to decrease the amount of children illness and injury. The Health Department maintains a website where the public can view inspection results at (www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/rri/index.shtml). You will be equipped with the most up to date technical equipment; including handheld computers to conduct inspections and investigations. You may inspect restaurants, mobile food carts, day camps, shelters, pools, saunas, correctional facilities, schools, senior centers, soup kitchens and residences to ensure compliance with all laws and regulations enacted to protect the public’s health. To qualify, you need a baccalaureate degree, with at least 30 semester credits in biological and/or physical sciences; or, an associates degree with 12 semester credits in biological and/or physical sciences plus five years of experience as a public health technician assisting sanitarians and engineers in carrying out the various elements of prevention and control programs affecting the public’s health. We prefer candidates with excellent verbal, written, interpersonal and organizational skills.Starting salary: $38,436 plus generous vacation days with some carry-over allowed. New York State Residency Is Required. Travel throughout the city using public transportation may be required. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:1. A Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, with at least 30 semester credits in the biological and/or physical sciences, i.e., biology, botany, chemistry, geology, physics, physiology, and zoology; or2. An Associate degree from an accredited college, with 12 semester credits in the biological and/or physical sciences, and five years of experience as a public health technician assisting sanitarians and engineers in carrying out the various elements of prevention and control programs affecting the public’s health.Special NoteAt the end of one year of satisfactory service in Assignment Level I, and completion of any training required under the New York State Health Code, incumbents will be assigned to Assignment Level II subject to a one year probationary period.*AN OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT MAY BE REQUIRED TO VERIFY THE REQUIRED CREDITS IN THE BIOLOGICAL AND/OR PHYSICAL SCIENCES.
