DIVISION/PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The New York City Poison Control Center is a critical resource for both the medical community and the public, and coordinates the Health Department's 24/7 response. The Poison Center provides emergency toxicology management recommendations and drug information to health care professionals and the general public. The Poison Center also monitors poisoning incidence citywide and conducts community education to prevent poisonings. The Poison Center receives over 70,000 calls annually and is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year by pharmacists, nurses and physician's assistants.As a Poison Information Specialist you will:• Provide emergency medical information to both the public and health care providers regarding calls about potential exposures, and poison or drug information inquiries and determine if a hospital or private doctor visit is necessary.• You will triage all home calls and determine if a caller can safely be treated at home or refer to appropriate health care facility. • You will obtain a complete and through history from each caller and then make the appropriate decisions and treatment recommendations. • Handle all complex poisoning exposures with assistance and respond to drug information inquiries with assistance. • Act as a liaison for the DOHMH after hours for various agencies, such as Epidemiology & Environmental Health.You will receive on the job training required to become a Certified Specialist in Poison Information. Initial training is approximately 3 months and all work is supervised. Opportunities are provided for accredited continuing education. PREFERRED SKILLS:• Extensive knowledge of pharmacology and clear communication skills.Second language skills are desired, but not required. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:Must possess one of the following valid New York State licenses or certification:Registered PharmacistRegistered Professional NurseRegistered Physician's AssistantCertified Nurse PractitionerThe licenses and/or certification listed above must be maintained for the duration of employment.
